Therapy for teens

I am able to be present when you are hopeless and can help you see the good within.

These are difficult times. With a continuing, ever-changing global pandemic, climate change, systemic and interpersonal racism, threats to reproductive rights and LGBTQI rights as well as to our democracy, and an uncertain economic future, feeling hopeful can seem impossible. It can be hard to see your way out of anxiety and depression. Through therapy, you will better be able to focus on what you have control over and let go of what you don’t.

How therapy works

Therapy can help anxious or depressed teens. Perfectionism does not have to be a way of life. Through therapy, you can learn new ways to relate to other people as well as yourself. You will also uncover and build upon your strengths.

A strong, trusting relationship between the two of us, along with identifying what works for you, are keys to positive change. We talk about what is on your mind. I don’t listen passively, but think with you about what may be going on under the surface and what would help. I also make careful interpretations and observations.

Depending what you are interested in, I also lintegrate art into our sessions, such as collage, altered books, and drawing prompts. Sand tray (sometimes called sandtray or sandplay therapy) can also be a fun way to see what might be going on under the surface for you in ways that can be surprising.

The role of parents

Mother and teen daughter smiling with eyes closed, teen leaning into motherOlder teens are becoming independent and getting ready to launch into adulthood. Younger teens are just beginning to start this process. In both cases, it is important that you have a safe and confidential space to work things out. I protect your privacy. Depending on your situation, however, I may check in with your parent(s) when necessary, either in person or on the phone, always keeping you in the loop.
